Brian the Bass (and backing vocals)

(He's the Man with the Van!)

I was classically trained as a trumpeter throughout my school years and had a choice of careers at age 18 - either further my playing at music college or become a bean counter back in Bristol. Never having seen a musician make a decent wage it was a no brainer.

One of four kids all with the gift of singing harmonies passed down from our music teaching mother, I soon started singing next to my brother in folk clubs - an acoustic bass followed, and brianthebass was born.

The Bertha Band came first - a folk trio, and this was followed by a trip into bluegrass where the Borderline Bluegrass Band combined fiddle, banjo, guitar and electric bass with four part harmonies.

Pub gigs and festivals fine-tuned the playing style but, having grown up in the 60's and 70's a hankering for something a little heavier lingered.

A Santana-esque tribute was formed under the name of RTZ and a drummer called Kearin invited to join. Kearin sang fabulous high harmonies and I was delighted to add additional vocal lines around him. The Bob-cat harmony twins had arrived!

We have played bass/drums and sang harmonies together ever since that day - 17 years and never a cross word!

During this time I was building up a PA system and would mix the desk, work the lights, play bass and sing harmonies all at the same time. I was asked to mix a desk for someone else's gig and my sound engineering career had started without my noticing it.

I trade as AA PA hire and have mixed across the UK - any number of named 60's bands and everything from solo artists to full orchestras. I am the resident engineer at the Ridings Theatre and thoroughly enjoy producing quality sound for others.
